Not only do they add a welcome bit of modern motorsports-inspired visual motion to the design, but the cutouts also reveal an inner case ring in rich, anodized Gulf Racing orange, which adds a wealth of energy to the presentation overall. The flowing, sculpted black-coated pushers also lend the design a bit more complexity and impact, but the real star of the show is the bezel. Featuring a bold, chaotically textured forged carbon tachymeter insert with exclusive “Gulf” text and an orange shield emblem at 12 o’clock, the bezel design offers by far the most visual texture and depth of the overall case design, while further tying into modern racing cues with an edge styled to resemble a vented carbon brake rotor. Despite the simple, effective visual punch of the design here, though, there are still a handful of elements that will likely prove contentious. The white date display at 3 o’clock markedly disrupts the overall look here, for example, and the surrounding white dial text can be remarkably difficult to read against the pale blue dial stripe.

The wide, fully matte presentation resonates well with the broad, planar case design on the wrist, and the titanium construction makes even this boldly proportioned sports chronograph feel remarkably light and comfortable on the wrist.
With its ostensibly entry-level positioning and lack of connection to the more popular Formula 1 Solargraph, the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Automatic Chronograph has had an uphill road towards an enthusiast following. With its vibrant, heritage-driven presentation and rugged construction, though, the new limited edition TAG Heuer Formula 1 Automatic Chronograph x Gulf might be just the watch to launch the line into broader popularity.
